TOW LIKE AN ASS
There’s nothing more sure-footed and safe than a pack mule, and we can all learn a bit from our four-legged friends as we load up our trailers with boats, campers, motorcycles and water toys for our summer road trips. Here are a few things to think about when you’re getting ready to hitch up & hit the open road.
You don’t want to ride a donkey down into the Grand Canyon that isn’t ready for the trip. Make sure your brakes are in good shape, your motor oil isn’t over the proper mileage (and change if you’re due) and top off that radiator. The tires on your car and the trailer should be inflated as recommended, and you want to make sure you have a spare — for both.
Don’t Put a Hitch in Your Giddy-up
You wouldn’t want to spend 4 hours on a burro with nothing but a towel and a set of boxers, so don’t get cheap or lazy when it comes to saddling up your trailer. This means a ball that’s the right size for the trailer, good safety chains (properly connected) and the right electrical connection for the trailer lights.
Proper Weight & Distribution
No mule would be happy with 1,000 pounds on his back, just like your car isn’t going to like towing more than the manufacturer’s max towing weight (if you’re not sure, check your owner’s manual). Don’t overload the trailer, make sure everything’s tied down properly and check it often — You don’t want to have to scrape your ATV off the side of the highway, and the guy behind you certainly doesn’t want to see it hop off your trailer at 50 MPH.
You don’t want to look like a greenhorn whether it’s riding a mule or trying to back a trailer into the water. Practice may not make perfect, but it will definitely make you better. You can also make life a bit easier as you’re learning to back that beast up (the trailer, not the donkey) with a wireless backup camera.
